The Piarco AeroPark is a development located at the Piarco International Airport, which is under the auspices of Airports Authority of Trinidad and Tobago. The vision of the Authority for the Piarco AeroPark is to develop and manage a world class mixed- use park that would contribute to the economic development of Trinidad and Tobago by attracting local and international investment. The Piarco AeroPark comprises approximately 68 hectares of land with available roads, electrical, water and sewerage infrastructure to support a mixed use development, which will be accommodating a range of business activities including warehousing, offices, indoor and outdoor recreational facilities, light industry, technology and services and of course - Aviation Services. The development is line with an innovation in the aviation industry, known as the Aerotropolis concept or Airport City. The term was coined by Professor John Kasarda of the University of North Carolina. Dr. Kasarda's research demonstrates that airports have evolved past their traditional role of merely providing aviation related services. Major airports in various parts of the world have developed extensive non - aeronautical facilities and revenues that have an impact outside of the airport's boundaries, literally and figuratively. Research by Dr. Kasarda and other scholars in airport management and urban development point to the fact that some of the leading airports in the world have extensively developed their non - aeronautical services and land-side lands into multi- functional urban centres.
